HP Grabs Phoenix Software

Right after making headlines for a lawsuit against New Jersey-based Turbon International Inc., the largest personal computer (PC) manufacturer Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ - Analyst Report) has hit the headlines again for acquiring three virtualization software lines from software maker Phoenix Technologies Ltd.

The deal is valued at $12.0 million and will give Phoenix the opportunity to focus on the core systems software market. We believe that, in keeping with the revival in demand for software and IT products, the demand for virtualization software will increase in an attempt to improve the productivity of each server. The software lines that will be acquired by HP include HyperSpace, HyperCore and Phoenix Flip products.

HP has always grown through strategic acquisitions. During fiscal 2008, the company acquired nine companies, the largest of which was Electronic Data Systems (“EDS”) for approximately $13.9 billion. The company’s Technology Solutions Group (“TSG”) segment shifted its outsourcing services operations and a part of its consulting and integration activities to EDS. We believe the EDS acquisition will give the services portion of the TSG business a stronger foothold to compete against its largest rival, International Business Machines (IBM - Analyst Report).

This apart, in November 2009, the company declared that it will be acquiring networking major 3Com. This $2.7 billion acquisition has put HP in open competition with networking leader Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO - Analyst Report). It also strengthened its position in the Chinese market, as 3Com has good exposure to China, both in terms of manufacturing and sales.

After overtaking all its competitors in the PC market, the tech major’s aggressive measures have now enabled it to capture the top slot in the server business. As per the recent report published by the technology research firm Gartner, HP generated $3.4 billion in server revenues during the first three months of the current year, up 16.0% compared with the year-ago period.

On the other hand, during the same period, the server revenues of IBM dipped 2.1% to $3.05 billion. The performances of the two companies in the last quarter put HP in the leadership position, with a 31.5% market share, exceeding IBM’s market share of 28.4%. The virtualization software acquired from Phoenix may further enhance the potential of HP’s server segment, as the company may strategically bundle these software with its servers, which may offer better value to end customers.

Business-analytics software on rise

The sales of SAS Software (Thailand) have grown by more than 50 per cent in each of two recent consecutive quarters.

Now, eight months after his appointment, managing director Taveesak Saengthong is aiming to more than triple the business and the workforce of the business-analytics company within the next three years.

Taveesak was previously country manager for Hitachi Data Systems Thailand's data storage solutions. He joined the local unit of SAS Software last October. Despite the lingering effects of the global economic crisis and domestic political upheaval, the software house, under Taveesak's stewardship, achieved year-on-year sales growth of 56 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2009 and 86 per cent in the first quarter of this year.

Speaking to The Nation last week, Taveesak said SAS Software had been far from utilising its full potential and should be able to expand its business and workforce by more than three times over the next three years.

He said SAS had 150 employees in the Philippines, compared with a staff of only 42 in Thailand.

"For us to grow to more than 150 staff should be possible within three years," he said, adding that the company planned to increase its workforce to 60 by the end of this year.

Global sales amounting to US$2.3 billion (Bt74.6 billion) last year showed that SAS's technologies were very influential in the conduct of many businesses worldwide. However, the firm and its solutions are not as well known in Thailand. Therefore, building up awareness of SAS among local organisations and showing them how they can benefit from the company's offerings will be one of Taveesak's prime points of focus.

SAS's three major products groups are customer intelligence, risk intelligence and business-analytics frameworks. Taveesak said Tops Supermarkets and most mobile-phone operators were among the local customers for SAS's customer-intelligence products. These had helped them to analyse and learn their customers' behaviour, enabling them to offer relevant and timely products and services, while optimising their product placements and inventories.

Financial institutions and the Thai Credit Bureau are among the clients for SAS's risk-intelligence solutions, which are attracting more interest among local businesses because of the recent violent protests in Bangkok, he said.

The business-analytics framework, meanwhile, has been used by many government agencies that apply so-called "executive dashboards" to measure key-performance indices. The project was dubbed "Ministry Operation Centres" during the tenure of the Thaksin government.

SAS has recently been contacted by a local political party that is interested in using its social-media analytics solutions to monitor public opinion on online communities.

Taveesak said that this tool, although largely limited to Bangkok and the higher-income section of the population that used websites intensively, was much more accurate than market surveys or polls.

"You can check who's more popular between 'Kai Oo' [military spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd] or [movie star] Ken Theeradeth. Or we can tell which BlackBerry models are the most talked-about and thus we can rechannel our money for holding events and advertisements to different models," he said.

SAS also has an anti-fraud framework that governments, tax offices and banks can use to detect fraudulent behaviour as well as terrorist-funding sources.

Taveesak said many local customers still did not know that SAS offered "on-demand" or "Software-as-a-Service" solutions. The company also aims to promote its warranty-analysis solutions among manufacturing clients.

Taveesak succeeded Kwanchai Lertchurushan, who left SAS to pursue his own businesses after spending five years in the post. Since the firm was set up in Thailand in 2001, SAS has had three managing directors - all of them Thais. Unlike many other software firms, SAS has a policy of appointing local chief executives in every country in which it operates, Taveesak said.

Worldwide, SAS has been riding the wave of intensifying interest in business-intelligence software. Gartner, an IT research firm, has predicted that business intelligence will be the hottest technology trend in 2010, leading social networking and cloud computing, which it placed second and third, respectively.

Meanwhile, informed sources say SAS has given a major boost to its aggressive sales drive with the recent appointment of Kasidit Kolasastraseni as sales director for the financial services industry and commercial sales. Should I buy anti-virus software for OS X?

To the best of my knowledge, there is (at least at this time) pretty much no reason to buy anti-virus software for OS X. The exception is if you are professionally or personally responsible for exchanging a lot of files with PC-using colleagues; in that case, to avoid becoming an unwitting conduit for viruses and malware that affect Windows machines, it may be polite (or required by your employer) for you to run AV on your Mac. There's a solid free option (ClamXAV) and several commercial packages out there.

Of course, that recommendation may change in months and years to come. Just this week, AV vendor Intego has pointed to a presumed piece of Mac-compatible spyware; Mac OS X Hints links to the methods for spotting and removing the "PremierOpinion" app. OS X is quickly becoming more attractive as a target for exploits, plus browser exploits continue to be a concern. But for right now? It's not clear that the benefits of AV apps for Mac outweigh the potential stability and performance penalties.

If you do feel you must use AV, TUAW posted a nice run-down of peaceful antivirus tips a few years ago, about the same time that Apple pulled some obsolete antivirus knowledge base information (carried over from the 'Classic' Mac OS 9 era) from its support site. As some of my IRC buddies point out, we've never heard of any Mac AV software that has caught an OS X virus before it became a problem. Installing security updates soon after they come out is probably better than grabbing antivirus software, in my humble opinion.

The size of the update may vary if you pick it up via Software Update -- we saw 315 MB on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.3. The combo update for all 10.6 systems weighs in at a bandwidth-hogging 887.4 MB.

The 10.6.4 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It includes Safari 5 and general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:

Jive Software Wants to Be Facebook for the Enterprise

Jive Software today launched what it hopes will become a Facebook-style social networking platform for businesses, complete with an activity stream for internal communications, an open API and an open application store. The company also announced that it is licensing the Twitter “firehose” — an index of all 65 million tweets that are posted to the service daily — and will be offering Jive software through the Google Apps marketplace. Jive’s launch is the latest attempt to bring social networking to the enterprise, but this is a market that has so far balked at jumping on board the social bandwagon, and the odds of failure are high.

“Enterprise is the next big opportunity in social networking,” said Christopher Lochhead, the company’s chief strategy officer. “Until now, most of the innovation in that area has been coming on the consumer side. For the most part, the last 10 years or so has been the lost decade for the enterprise, and we want to change that.” According to Lochhead, Jive is “the largest and fastest-growing social business services company” with more than 3,000 customers and a total of over 15 million users of its software platform, which is now called Social Business Software (formerly Clearspace).

Lochhead and Jive Software co-founder Matt Tucker, who is also the company’s chief technology officer, said they want to bring the benefits of social networking — and open standards — to the corporate sector, while still giving companies the control they need to achieve the security and other criteria they require. Launching today at the Enterprise 2.0 conference is a single dashboard-style view of that pulls in whatever relevant information an employee needs to know, Tucker says, whether that comes from Twitter or email or a shared document on the intranet. The company calls this view “Jive What Matters.”

With New Software, Apple Opens 100M Mobile Stores

Apple today, Jun. 15, 2010, introduced free Apple Store software for iPads, iPod touches and iPhones that enables customers to shop the retailer directly from the mobile devices. The new application supports browsing and shopping for Apple wares complete with user reviews and detailed product specifications, much like Apple’s retail website. Customers can also create appointments for in-store services such as Personal Shopping, Genius Bar or One-on-One training.

Up to now, one could always shop the Apple Store or make in-store appointments through a web browser, so in that regards, the software isn’t adding any new functionality. But Apple’s retail web channel can be clunky in a small browser window, and clunky doesn’t sell hardware or software. Apple products and shopping are as much about the experience as they are about performance and features.

Apple could have created a mobile web version of its store, but by building a clean mobile storefront for use only on its own devices, it’s furthering the “halo effect” it already enjoys. And that effect can further influence owners of the 100 million iOS4 devices Apple says it’s sold — it’s like 100 million little mobile retail stores were just opened.

Two things jump out at me, though: First, the new software isn’t optimized for Apple’s iPad, one of the hottest devices currently available with an estimated 200,000 sales a week. That means iPad owners have to make do with a small version of the app or use the pixel-doubling feature to see it in full screen. And there’s no social aspect to the application — given the growth of social networking, I would have expected some type of such functionality. Perhaps a link to Twitter to say, “Hey, I just bought the new redesigned Apple Mac Mini that debuted this morning!” Even with those two minor niggles, Apple’s next earnings call should prove interesting if the company breaks out product sales generated by its new mobile software.

Xobni Goes Back In Time With Boxed Software

Social email startup Xobni is channeling Microsoft today. The company is now selling the premium version of its product, called Xobni Plus, which the company rolled out last year, in a number of stores. The boxed software, which will be featured in stores right next to the newly released Microsoft Office 2010 software, will be sold at Office Max, Fry’s and a few other brick and mortar establishments, putting Xobni in 3,500 stores in total. Xobni Plus will also be sold on Amazon.

Xobni is hoping to capitalize on some of the foot traffic that Microsoft will be bringing to stores for the new version of Office. Office is carried in 35,000 brick and mortar stores, and Xobni says that its software is currently in 10% of those stores, and will be adding its offering to more stores soon. The price for the boxed set will be the same as it is online: a one time fee of $29.95.

So why is Xobni going old school with software in brick and mortar stores? The company claims that retail boxes improve conversion online (60% of customers that Xobni surveyed say they are more likely to buy software online if they saw the software in a retail store) And 80% of people surveyed (over 2000 respondents) said they were likely or very likely to buy software in a retail store in the next year. Xobni also says that retail boxed software has a higher perceived value/price point.

Xobni’s social email plugin essentially makes your e-mail smarter (Xobni is inbox spelled backwards) and integrates LinkedIn, Twitter Yahoo Mail, Facebook, Skype, Hoovers and more into your Outlook inbox. The Plus product improves search in this plugin, and includes an autosuggest feature, which can use linked Facebook and LinkedIn accounts to pair Email address with full names, as well as the ability to search within your Xobni ‘feeds’ in the sidebar.

Xobni, which just raised $16.2 million in new funding, has been looking for ways to make money over the past year. Plus is one of these revenue streams, and Xobni also offers a paid syncing service between devices and desktop clients called Xobni One.

Of course, the offering of Plus in retail stores is more than just a revenue opportunity for Xobni. It’s also a branding opportunity to associate its product with Microsoft to consumers. While this move doesn’t represent an established partnership with Microsoft, Xobni is clearly hoping to ride on Office 2010′s coattails.
